Assignment 1: Introduction & Film Trailer

Shown below is the start to my Assignment 1: Review of digital video technology in interactive media in 2016, steady progress so far but getting off to a good start. got the majority of the first and part of the second section completed. I have also decided which video clips to look at for the assignment brief.

With the rise in popularity of the internet, the usage of digital video has also grown in comparison to television. It is used for many different purposes including: film trailers, e-learning, user-generated content, viral marketing, advertising, VR tours and games. Although, VR (Virtual Reality) tours are the most recent due to the invention and take off of 360 degree videos. Digital video is implemented within many different websites with the main ones being as follows: YouTube, Vimeo and Twitch etc. Also, with the various implementation methods video content can now be played across multiple platforms not just pc’s such as Mobile devices e.g. tablet, phone, Smart TV’s, games consoles and information kiosks. Within this article I will be exploring all of the points mentioned above and comparing the various uses and types of digital video.

What applications take advantage of online video material?

One of the arguably most popular uses for video is within film trailers. The most noticeable difference with film trailers in comparison to other different types of digital video is that they are generally of much higher quality, typical 1920 x 1080p as the main focus is the video content which the directors want the audience to be captivated by how amazing the visuals appear; entice viewers to watch the film upon release.

Recording Gameplay Footage

Shown below is the beginning of the editing process of the game play footage recorded last night. However, these were only practice sessions so I could test my recording software, OBS, as well as the audio and video quality and how well they work together to produce my video. The game play itself was recorded last night with Dan, Sam and friends on the 5th June.Slow progress at first and have had problems with audio with Adobe Premiere Pro but issues have been sorted as of present. Hope to continue working on this and get the voiceover sorted by the end of this week/ beginning of next.We are currently working on devising a script for the voiceover.

Similar channels have created a review video on Heroes of the Storm including main channels and informative companies such as IGN and GameSpot, however, these tend to include all gameplay footage with an audio overlay reviewing the title as opposed to the footage being shot live. Although these are informative they lack the comical aspect that many YouTubers dedicated to this field have.

Other reviewers such as AngryJoe do incorporate a mixture of real-life footage alongside their in-game content however, these tend to be more of a comical factor as opposed to being purely factual and serious.

There are also little to no reviews on Heroes of the Storm past the alpha/beta stage of the development of the title therefore creating a year one review would appeal to many people and perhaps generate an interest in a MOBA that is currently overshadowed by the larger titles in the genre such as League of Legends, Dota and Smite to name a few.

Although it has to be noted that IGN does specialize in other areas than gaming reviews hence the 7 million approx. subscribers in YouTube with having their own website and other forms of media. In comparison, AngryJoeShow has 2.5 million approx subscribers on YouTube and mainly features content such as gaming reviews as well as reviews on other types of media such as films and tv shows. This may not prove that only gameplay only based review content does well but rather the size of the company to begin with as having 2 million subscribers is still a high number in consideration.

Both companies monetize through the use of advertising such as IGN
